China Resources Archive Library

Shades of Grey

The ChinaResources Archive interprets the memory and legacy of an enterprise witharchitectural language - material, space, light and shadows - on a hilly siteadjacentto a southernChina beach. A series of exterior terraces allows people to enjoy the oceanview. The strongsunlight was treated as a special material during the de-sign process. Greybricks, as they are transformed from earth thus carry a memory, were used totexturize the building facade and trace the movement of the sun. At the inside, several additional grey tones were used to give the library its tranquility. Incontrast with the shades of grey, a vibrant yellow was chosen for speciallycrafted tiles cladding one of the main interior walls. This tiled wall alsoreceives bright sunlight through the skylight above and creates the highlightand a sense of surprise inside the low-profile archive library.
